Mother of Pearl Nail Design – Chrome Pigments and Acrylic Paint.

Hi everybody, I’m Kirsty Meakin from Naio Nails. In this video, I’m gonna show you how to make a Mother of Pearl effect on a nail. Kirsty: I mean like, do you know that shell, that Mother of Pearl shell? Adam: No! Kirsty: Are you kidding me?
Adam: I honestly don’t know. Kirsty: Have you not been to an event where they had a Mother of Pearl shell? Adam: No Kirsty: He’s never lived. He’s never lived. Do you see how it has these different colours running through it? And some of them have even like markings? Adam: Mmm. I had no idea! Kirsty: Look at that, somebody had their floor done. So, you see how these, at this, look at that. See how’s that marking? That one there, see that one there. That’s what we’re gonna do! That’s exactly what we’re gonna do! Right. So we’ve got a nail and we’re gonna use Snow White. I’m gonna do two coats of this. I want it really opaque. Just two nice thin coats of this gorgeous white. Bang it in the lamp! Now, how are we gonna make this look like the Mother of Pearl shell? So, how are we gonna make it look like mother of pearl shell? We are going to use Chromes. Oh my God! Four Chromes we’re gonna use because I’m so greedy. So, I have the Amethyst one, the Sapphire… I’ll do a little bit of Chrome. Oh I love it! Okay. So we’re gonna use the Emerald one. We gonna rub that in. And then we’re gonna get the next colour, which we gonna go for the Sapphire. Adam: Did you say that is Emerald? Kirsty: Yeah! on white, it’s different on white! Adam: Oh! That looks pink.
Kirsty: I don’t know why See how this looks a bit yellowy and we’re gonna get the Amethyst and we’re gonna rub that in there. And which one have we not done? We’ve not done this one. So, you’re gonna do them in random sort of patches. Let’s get the green one here It’s very faint, can you see it? What we need to do now is add those viney details. I am going to seal this with the urban graffiti topcoat because we’re going to paint. So, you will need some paint. I’ve got the burnt umber. Burnt umber! Adam: What’s that ****, Umber yeah? Kirsty: Burnt umber! What’s an umber?
Adam: I have no idea! Kirsty: I know what umber dinger is. You know what umber dinger is, do you? Adam: hum dinger
Kirsty: No, umber dinger Adam: Umber dinger?
Kirsty: Umber Dinger is a umbrella **Adam laughing** Kirsty: If you are from Stoke. Alright, so I’ve just mixed those two together to get a dark brown, okay? And then, what you need to do is to follow the little patches that you’ve created already. And you’re just separating them. This line does not need to be like a perfect line. Imperfection will make it look even better. You’re gonna water it down even more to make it like sludge colour. Kirsty: Can we use the word ”sludge” everywhere?
Adam: Hmm mm! And what you’re gonna do is just add a little bit of shadow under that line. This is going to give it the Mother of Pearl effect. So this is going to be those lines and details of the shell. It’s a marvel that you know where** these things are naturally made. Don’t you think? Adam: You know where?
Kirsty: It’s just like amazing that this such beauty is made naturally with shells and now they have all them colors, and I love Sapphire. So, I’m just moving it and what will happen is as soon as you touch the paint that’s there already, it will want to suck up to it. So it’ll just sit nicely next to it. You gonna add some fine little lines with that wash. What you need to do now is, make sure that’s completely dry. And then we’re going to seal it again with the urban graffiti gel polish topcoat. And then, we’re gonna pop that in the lamp. Right. So now we’ve done that. We’re gonna go over again with the Chrome. and it’s also going to change the colour of your markings that you’ve put on. Oooooooh. Everybody say, ‘Oooooh!’ So, I’ve got the blue here. Rub in the blue. Oooooooooooh!!! It looks better in real life than it is on camera by the way folks. Right. What we’re gonna do now is we’re gonna seal it again, but I’m gonna put some bling bling on because what would a nail be without a bit of bling? So you can see as we move the nail, it catches the light and it shimmers and shines like a Mother of Pearl and it’s got all those different shades in there. So you’ve got green tones, pink, blue, green and little bit of purple in there as well and a bit of bling to match as well. I hope you’ve enjoyed this video! We all like shells at the minute. I do like shells, you know. ** Maybe I’ll just want to be on the beach, instead of sat here So there you are! Check us out on Facebook and Instagram and don’t forget to check us out in the next video. Bye bye! Every time I go to Lands end, which is not very often. I don’t think I’ve been since I was about 10 but every time I went, I picked up something whether it is a bracelet or a little necklace that had a Mother of Pearl shell on it. Kirsty: You have it on certain watches as well
Adam: Hmmm Kirsty: You see what I mean?
Adam: No Kirsty: Well, what do you think it is?
Adam: I thought you meant the pearl itself?…. I don’t know Kirsty: Hey, sorry!… it would be just a minute Adam: Five hours later

  2. Try doing this over some patched/blended gel colors like pastel blues, purples, pinks and greens for a more dramatic effect.

  3. Umber is a natural brown or reddish-brown earth pigment that contains iron oxide and manganese oxide. It's darker than the other similar earth pigments, ochre and sienna. In its natural form, it's called raw umber. – wikipedia

  4. I saw some nails yesterday that were absolutely 'the mutts nuts'! The lady, a complete stranger, told me they were 4D nails. Do you know what she means Kirsty and if so, would you educate a heathen? Many thanks. 🙂
